Meebo: Complete IM experience over the web

Stumbled across Meebo, a cool web based IM application, thanks to Om Malik's post about this. How much did Meebo Get. On first look, I am damn impressed with Meebo. It aggregates the four major IM networks and nicely gives them in one buddy list. What impressed me about Meebo is that the application does not have any popup windows, and it mimics a standard desktop experience. You can have multiple chat windows that dock nicely at the bottom of the browser window, similar to windows taskbar. One does not have to worry about multiple popup windows cluttering up the task bar. Everything served via the browser and that too in a single browser window.

Now notifications are missing? It’s simple to add pop up notifications, similar to the Google/Firefox blogger web comments extension, so one can add chat notification to Meebo interface. Somebody signs in/signs out, one can use firefox extensions to notify these messages. Meebo can extended that and add Yahoo Messenger Email notification or Gmail notification. So what we have now is a complete web-based IM with a desktop like experience.


Meebo cannot survive on its own, so let’s move Meebo from a stand alone web application to Google personalized Homepage or Start.com page. What we have now is a really sticky start page, which contains, everything, right from your email, weather, local Map, RSS feeds to your IM with proper system tray like notification.
