Online file storage, any new ideas ?
Well its one of those days, I have been searching for a document that I had written a couple of years back. It is perhaps sitting pretty in one of those backup CDs lying in my closet, or perhaps its there in my 250GB USB drive which I cannot carry around and that cannot be indexed by google desktop search.
By now , that document must have seen atleast 5 desktops and 3 laptops, but it would like to settledown you see.
I am done with CDs and External USB’s, somebody give me an online drive, which is fast , searchable, shareable, taggable and is reliable. I think Yahoo has forgotten about briefcase, its been abandoned since its been created and Yahoo is going to wake up to its existence once Google does something about it, just like webmail. Guess sometimes companies get so used to “playing catchup”, that they forget they can actually run faster and win.
There have been few attempts to leverage Gmail’s 2 GB storage like the Gmail Shell extension and new service reported in Beta news which leverages Gmail for file sharing.
All these are creative hacks, but lack basic features like tagging, search, virus scan, easy uploading. Besides these are not supported by Google, so they can go out of operation any day.
Yahoo : How about briefcase having 1 Gb, integrating with flickr for photos, video.yahoo.com for videos and music.yahoo.com for music and podcasts ? Yeah RIAA is not going to like this , but then just for the possibility that users can trade music files, should not stop users from storing and sharing ANY files online. One can create a virtual community around sharing of files of common interests.
